Rankings: What Order Are Web Pages Listed?

There are many factors which determine the position of a website in the search results. Although the main search engines work to the same ethos - to provide high quality results - they define and measure quality in different ways.

They also change their methods constantly, so it is a never ending moving target! How relevant a website's content is to a search is and probably always will be important. Currently however, one of the most important factors is the amount of incoming links (links on other web sites a web page has), and the page that link is coming from. Also important, is the text inside and sorrounding the links pointing towards a web page.

It must be rembered there are many other factors involved.
